Tutoring
I have experience tutoring students in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. This includes a student who was at risk of being removed from the Biology A-level course because of lower-than-expected grades and students who planned on resisting exams, and in all these cases I was able to help the students pass.
Biomedical Sciences Stream Leader
I designed and taught a weeklong course related to my PhD programme in Shanghai, China. This course was targeted towards 16–18-year-old students who aspired to study in the UK—in particular Oxbridge—and involved a series of lectures, laboratory experiments and coding lessons.
English-Additional Language helper
I assisted non-native English-speaking students in Biology and Chemistry lessons at school—helping them learn at their own pace when lessons were going too fast and guiding them to understand the subject content in a one-on-one environment.
SKILLS AND INTERESTS
In my free time, I enjoy creating things. This includes crocheting, knitting, painting and drawing. I also enjoy reading and watching cartoons and anime!
WORK EXPERIENCE
Research Assistant –University of Oxford
I supported research into tendon biology by helping with laboratory experiments, such as imaging human tendon samples.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
My journey into tutoring began in Sixth form when I volunteered to help a student in my biology class who was at risk of being removed from the course because of lower-than-expected grades. After guiding her through the syllabus and exam-style questions—offering her insights into the tricky mark schemes—she was able to remain on the course. From this experience, I realised the profound impact that personalised education could have on a student’s confidence and academic performance.
Working as a tutor for several years, I’ve developed the skills necessary to adapt to each student’s unique learning style. At school, I worked with various students who were non-native English speakers and struggled to keep up with the pace of the rest class. This experience taught me the importance of creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions and express their difficulties. I believe that when students are given the space to learn at their own pace, they can not only improve their academic performance but also develop a genuine interest in the subject. This is something I hope to foster in my students, especially since it is a highly coveted trait in Oxbridge admissions.
My academic background in Biomedical Sciences has given me a strong foundation in the sciences and maths, and I have been able to draw from this knowledge to enrich my tutoring sessions. Additionally, my role as a Biomedical Sciences Stream Leader, where I designed and taught a course for aspiring university students in Shanghai, has enhanced my ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear and accessible manner. This experience, combined with my enthusiasm for teaching, has allowed me to build rapport with students of all abilities, helping them to excel academically.
Ultimately, I aim to make learning a positive and enjoyable experience. At school, my ability and willingness to learn were made exponentially greater by having teachers I connected with, and I hope to be offer this to all my students.
