SKILLS AND INTERESTS
I am an avid sports person and love all sorts of physical activity. I tried out for the Cypriot national team for basketball during my primary and secondary school years and have currently transitioned into Olympic Weightlifting. However, I still possess an interest in spectating basketball, football and rugby. In addition to my physical activities, I enjoy reading, watching or playing video games on science fiction and fantasy literature. My favourite piece of literature I have encountered along the way is the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien which subsequently made me a fan of all of his literary works. In addition to English, I speak Turkish on a native level and am currently learning Russian and German.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I discovered my passion for teaching during my high school years while explaining historical concepts and ideas to my peers who were puzzled during lectures. I deconstructed a chain of events into basic principles and reconstructed them as the topics evolved into more complex concepts. Gradually, this evolved into recording myself doing mock lectures and aiding my peers through my ability to understand the scope of the subjects we were taught. I really got to test these skills during a project me and my peers worked on with the local youth centre, which entailed teaching English as a second Language to young people in the workforce in a professional capacity. Compared to communicating an idea through an easily accessible medium, teaching a method of communication proved to be a much more challenging opportunity. It forced me to explore different approaches to engaging communication and methodologies. At the end of this 7 month experience, I gained valuable experience in instructing both ideas and methods of understanding, which I believe contributed to my understanding of how teaching works. It has shaped my teaching abilities into a tailored experience that focuses on acquiring a methodology of learning rather than teaching a set amount of information. Hence, I aim to teach students on how to use various methods and tools to acquire and assimilate knowledge rather than giving them a set of information that's usefulness may expire. In my experience, this method provides the best long term benefits for any scenario that might require learning a foreign subject or skill, which is why I use this method in a safe and supportive environment for all.
