PERSONAL STATEMENT

I know how challenging growing up can be when you’re trying to develop the skills and grades to create a successful future while also balancing all the social pressures of a school environment. I’ve seen these different pressures shake a person’s confidence in themselves and their abilities, which can affect their academic performance. Working with students goes beyond trying to help them get good grades, but also in providing them with the skills and confidence to apply themselves in the different subjects and to build the foundation of how they approach challenging tasks throughout their lives. While my tutoring aims are to work with individual students to improve their grades, I ultimately strive to tailor the experience to encourage a deeper engagement to studying in general, and how to apply learnings as a long-term life skill. By reframing how students approach learning and exams, I have seen a shift in confidence that they carry forward outside of their studies.

Thinking back to when I was in school, I have vivid memories of the skills and methods I have learned from teachers and tutors, but not necessarily the syllabus in and of itself. This has always highlighted to me how powerful and important tailored teaching and approaches to learning are, and how these skills can equip you for life. Working with individual students and harnessing their unique qualities and strengths is vital to how I approach tutoring, and I never approach each tutoring session the same. Students all have the ability to thrive in the suitable conditions, and I encourage finding how to pull out their strengths to apply to their studies and make the conditions for them to succeed and feel confident.

During my IB I was inspired by my art teacher’s passion for the subject and how he was able to apply so many approaches to learning throughout the two years. He would support each student with their individual needs and gave us all the confidence to explore our interests within the subjects. With his encouragement and great teaching, I pursued design in university and later as a decade-long career. With the first-hand knowledge of how great teaching can change your life, I am very intentional in how I support and encourage students throughout the different stages of their studies to give them the life opportunities they deserve.
