Skills and Interests

Alongside my academic endeavours, I have had various involvement in sports and drama. In my final year at school I competed at Women’s Henley and was awarded ‘Oarswoman of the Season’ for my contributions to the school rowing club. At university, I was extensively involved with the student drama society, participating in numerous production in Durham, Edinburgh and London as a stage manager and producer. I enjoy cycling and walking outdoors, while at school I completed the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award. I can speak and write French to a moderate level.

Personal Statement

I attribute my success and enthusiasm for academic study to how much I enjoyed my educational experiences at school and at university. Nonetheless, I am acutely aware that not everybody’s needs are met within a traditional school environment. Wishing to share an enthusiasm for learning with others has been a great motivation in my teaching career so far. As a tutor, it is my aim to ensure that all my students have the tools and the confidence to experiment and fully explore their subject. In my career as a teacher and a tutor it has been greatly rewarding to see pupils progress in their work as well as grow in confidence, happier in the knowledge that they have been able to do their best in whatever challenge they have faced. I have found that working in a one-to-one setting can be more effective and enjoyable than otherwise. In particular, there are better opportunities for fruitful and interesting intellectual discussions. I take a genuine interest in a variety of subjects and greatly enjoy both facilitating learning and learning myself from students. My training has been very broad making me an ideal tutor for many subjects; even though I have trained as a secondary school maths teacher, my degrees were in essay subjects; English Literature and History. My experience in a school mean that I have a good knowledge of the new GCSE specifications. Additionally, I have worked abroad in order to improve my languages.
