PERSONAL STATEMENT
Since my early days in middle school, mentoring younger students has always been a passion of mine. My father has always told me that the smartest students are those who ask for help when
they need it. I have been one to ask for help and admire students who do the same. As a 6th grader,
I was selected to become a “reading buddy” for a first-grader named Ava. This is when my journey
began as a tutor and mentor. Soon enough, I was a high schooler and Ava was a middle schooler. I
continued to be her coach in Speech and Debate. Being nationally ranked second in the nation in
the forensic event of Original Oratory, I was one of a few high schoolers whose moral duty it was to
pass along our speech skills to younger students. However, this went far beyond speaking. I was
blessed to have great English teachers and Speech coaches who shaped the hundreds of hours of
writing I have dedicated to not only my school work and essays but also to writing my speeches.
Being an Indian from Tanzania, I went back to my roots and started fundraising and giving back to
impoverished students in Dar es Salaam by sending donations directly to schools as fees to educate students, so they too would have the opportunities and enrichment that I was blessed to have. In 10th grade, I was honoured to be presented the award for English Scholar from all the students in my year. I owe all of my English writing skills to my teachers, tutors, coaches, and my mother.
Soon I was off to University. Within my first year of being at Tulane, I joined a Pre-Professional Law
society, PhiAlphaDelta. I immediately began running for and achieving leadership roles until my last year at University. As the Professional Chair on the board of this organization, it was my job to equip members with interviewing and resume-building skills. This involved a great deal of presentations, one-on-one interview practice, and editing of resumes and cover letters that plunged me back into my tutoring and mentoring passion. Soon, a member of Phi Alpha Delta referred me to a family friend at a neighbouring high school who needed assistance with writing her personal statement for her University application. I was more than happy to help. I guided her in writing her common application essay, as well as supplemental essays. She was accepted and now attends her first choice of university. Her mother, who I was also more than happy to be in communication with whenever necessary was extremely pleased with my work and referred me to several other parents of the school her daughter attended. I soon was tutoring five students from the same school consistently for two years— each with different needs. Some students were younger, in middle school, and needed assistance in reading and comprehension. Meanwhile, others were slightly older, in ninth grade, and needed help formulating essays. Some just believed they had bad teachers, and I became their English teacher for two years, hoping to pass along the skills my teachers had passed on to me. My success in tutoring privately led me to apply to be a Writing Tutor at Tulane University’s Academic Learning Center. I was promptly accepted and dedicated another few hours a week to tutoring University students in whatever needs they had. Several of these students were non-native English speakers, which honestly taught me a lot about how to navigate this challenging situation. Some had attention deficit disorders. While I am proud of helping all these students, I am even more grateful for the opportunity to do so, as it expanded my horizons as an educator and equipped me with unique skills. My experience in teaching writing skills to so many students in so many different ways made my Masters applications to Kings College, University College of London, and of course the London School of Economics a breeze. I was blessed to be accepted to all the schools and every program I applied for. I now attend the London School of Economics and am studying Politics and Communication. This has involved a lot of writing and researching. I have scored merits and distinctions in all my essays and am currently working on my dissertation. I have also had the opportunity to work for StarSmiles, an up-and-coming teeth alignment company. This work has kept me sharp and on my toes, especially considering the Jme flexibility involved with writing an independent dissertation. All the while, some of my deep passions are weight lifting which I began in 2021 after the lockdown was lifted in my area. Health and fitness have become vehicles that enable my time management and organizational skills. I have also enjoyed changing my diet to a more sustainable one. In the process, I have a newfound passion for cooking and have recently begun to attempt to elevate my cooking skills to a level of fine dining. I like to tell my friends that one day I’ll be in Gordon Ramsay’s Masterchef Home Chef competition. I look forward to working with students and rewarding them with sweet snacks if requested based on their hard work and dedication.
