PERSONAL STATEMENT
I first became interested in tutoring when I and other fellow students organised an initiative to teach students who fell behind as a result of the covid lockdown. I taught a student who was struggling with the maths and sciences. I saw how the student’s attitude towards these subjects changed; although she was very interested, she would become easily frustrated with problems that she couldn’t solve. I found that by changing her mindset towards tackling big problems, I was helping her in other areas of life as well. We worked together to improve her grades, and I saw how her confidence increased, as well as her enthusiasm for the subject. With one-on-one supervision, I had time to teach her concepts that she was interested in outside the curriculum as well as preparing her for exams, becoming a role model for her. We developed a good working friendship, which was beneficial for improving her skills and making the student more confident.
This experience led me to become a DebateMate mentor, teaching children in afterschool clubs in London. Having been a champion debater for many years at school, I was conscious of my privilege in attaining such a skill and was keen to pass it on to children who would not have had that opportunity otherwise. I taught speaking, using exercises to help students develop their confidence. This experience exposed me to a wide variety of students with various learning needs; this adaptability equipped me very well to tutor children. My learning plans for sessions are therefore individualised to the needs of each student. I was also given the opportunity to judge debating competitions. In this role I gave feedback to each student, allowing me to give constructive criticism to children in a way that improved their confidence and concentrated on their positive achievements.
In my sessions I will focus on exam technique and revision skills, with an evidence-based approach for knowledge acquisition. I will tailor sessions for students’ individual needs, and try to make learning fun for the student while also helping them with grades. I am an enthusiastic teacher with knowledge of the maths and sciences that extends far beyond the curriculum due to my degree – as such, I believe that I have the knowledge base to successfully answer students’ questions. As well, I am a strong advocate for the integration of the humanities and sciences, thus making me appreciate the holistic nature of tutoring. I enjoy discussing the arts as much as science, and have participated in humanities based extracurriculars, leading me to compile a historical report for Kings’ College London. I am therefore as confident in discussing the humanities as I am in discussing the sciences.
I was privileged enough to have very good teachers, and would love to give back and pass on my knowledge. These experiences that I had prepared me for life, as well as helping me with my grades, and I still remember quotes from my teachers to this day. I aim to create the same secure and enjoyable environment that I had for my future students. Learning is a preparation for life and it would be an honour to teach.
