PERSONAL STATEMENT

I have always been enclosed in the teaching environment. My mother is a teacher, and since I was young, students would always come to my house for tuition classes. Once in a while my mother would let me handle some of the younger kids in the class, to help them get through with the tuition session.

I began to officially conduct tuition classes when I completed my formal secondary school education. One of my ex-neighbour’s kid was not performing well academically, and her national exam (for primary school level) was coming up in 4 months’ time. When I tutored her, I realised that the kid was not given encouragement to learn Maths and Science. The many years of neglect have rendered her to accept that she lacks the intelligence to understand the subjects, and that failure was a norm in her academics. It did take me a lot of effort to raise the kid’s confidence in learning again, but I was glad that our (mine and the kid’s) effort paid off because she eventually passed these subjects with B’s. I enjoyed the sense of accomplishment from this task, and since then I have been tutoring, even when I was studying in the university.

Even though I am academically prone towards the Sciences, especially Biology, I have always shown aptitude in languages. Throughout my schooling years, I have mastered English, Chinese and Malay, and this has enabled me to work as a translator and interpreter in a Chinese-based construction company in Malaysia. Being trilingual, I can easily switch between languages I believe that correct pronunciation of words is crucial in mastering a language, therefore I have also taken on the task of teaching phonics to kindergartners. I enjoy teaching Biology and General Sciences as well, because it allows the student to learn factual information about life, and also train students to think critically.

Through the years of my teaching experience, I have discovered that in order to reap the benefits of teaching, resonance from students matter as much as my own teaching skills and expertise. Several trials and errors have allowed me to tweak my teaching methods according to the students’ level of understanding, and to this day I find that tutoring is continuous process of upgrading my own teaching skills. For me, tutoring is and will always be a challenging journey in my teaching career, and I welcome it with open arms because of the numerous rewarding experiences it provides as I embark on it with every student I have.
