SKILLS & INTERESTS

As a Medical student, I am well versed in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Having competed to regional and national levels in Athletics, Cross Country, and Swimming whilst also studying for GCSEs and A Levels, I am driven and able to manage time well. I am also interested in Rowing, having taken up the sport at university. Lastly, I am semi-fluent in Italian.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My first experience tutoring laid the foundation for my interest in tutoring today. It was at school where I was approached by a teacher asking me to tutor a student from Year 8 (I was a Year 11 at the time) in Maths. The student was an intelligent child but he seemed to lose confidence during exams, leading to poor results. Over the course of a term, I saw this student’s confidence in their ability blossom, which this being reflected in his results taking him from a below-average student to well-above average. Whilst the exam results were a good indicator for the effectiveness of the work I did with this child, it was the change in the child’s attitude towards Maths that really impressed me and made me feel that my work was worthwhile, with the student being much more willing to take initiative and work through problems that they would have previously given up on.

I experienced incredible education during both my school career and university, therefore I understand the difference that a good teacher can make. I believe myself to be a kind, patient, and encouraging tutor with a strong ability to break down complex concepts into easy-to-understand language. I am able to form unique teaching plans for each student depending on which areas they need the most support and am well versed in good exam techniques that I can pass down to the tutee to ensure that their increases in knowledge and confidence are reflected in their exam results. Moreover, having experienced first-hand the stress of examinations (from the 11+ exams I took to get into the Grammar school I attended, to the A Levels I took to get into UCL), I understand that examinations and the preparations you do for them can take a mental toll on a person if a balance between work and recreation is not reached, hence I would be able to encourage and teach the student in a way that doesn’t overly-exert them, avoiding burnout.
